<image:title>Home - What is Counselling & Psychotherapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>Counselling & Psychotherapy are therapeutic processes of interaction between a trained therapist and person who is seeking help. This help may be for a psychological issue, problem-solving, recovery, to learn coping strategies, emotional support or a quest for deeper self-understanding. Counselling & Psychotherapy offer an opportunity to be listened to and for you to offload in confidence, without judgement. This process in itself can be very cathartic. Therapy is a collaborative working relationship between client and therapist, rather than a passive process - it’s something that clients get the most from if they engage with the work. I’m trained in Counselling and Psychotherapy; so use both approaches in my work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - How might Counselling & Psychotherapy help me?</image:title>
<image:caption>As your therapist, I will provide a safe space to explore and reflect on your situation and indeed yourself. As I am coming from an objective viewpoint, I may bring fresh perspective to your situation. The process of therapy is different to having a chat with a friend, who may be supportive, but is likely to offer opinions based on their experiences or values and be emotionally involved. This can cause conflict between figuring out what we really want or wanting to please others. Engaging in therapy has the potential to enable you to make desired changes to your life, enhance your well-being and provide you with coping strategies for your future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Therapy - Counselling and Psychotherapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Investment: £55 per session Sessions last for 50 minutes and are held weekly at the same time and day of the week. Our first session will be an assessment session, during which I will ask you to complete a client contact sheet and pre-counselling questionnaire to gather relevant background information (my privacy policy advising how collected data is used and GDPR statement can be found here), We will discuss what has bought you to counselling and go through our client agreement together. All forms can be viewed by clicking the highlighted word. I promise to be transparent with session boundaries, confidentiality limitations and honest about whether I feel it within my competence to help you. This will hopefully enable you to make an informed choice about whether you would like to work with me. I’m client-led with the number of sessions and will never tell you how many sessions you ‘will need’ - as it’s not a question that can be easily answered. However, I recommend committing to 6 sessions initially. This will hopefully give us time for you to feel comfortable to share what you need to, in order to work on what has led you to therapy. After 6 sessions, we will review and agree on more sessions, change the frequency or work towards ending. However, you are under no obligation to book further sessions and can choose to finish your therapy when you want to; although I would always recommend having a final ending session. I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation prior to therapy commencing if you would like to speak to me before deciding to go ahead. It’s my belief that how comfortable you feel with me, will be key in the therapy process. You will need to request this in your inquiry email. Payment for sessions will be required 24 hours before each session, by bank transfer. For in person sessions, you can also chose to pay with cash in the session if preferred. 24 hours notice must be given to cancel a session, otherwise a cancellation charge will apply. Please note due to my insurance restrictions, I can only work with clients who are over 15 years of age.</image:caption>

<image:title>Therapy - Single Session Counselling Investment £65</image:title>
<image:caption>Single Session Counselling may be an ideal if there is a particular scenario or problem in your life that you would like to explore, offload about or find a solution for. This way of working is particularly good for crisis management, as I will endeavour to see you at the point of need. So if you chose this way to work, I will see you as quickly as possible. You will be sent a preparation form to complete and return to me before the session. This will help us make best use of the time we have together and make me aware of what it is that has led you to seek help. We will have up to 50 minutes to explore the situation and hopefully find a solution, that we can rehearse in the session if appropriate. Should you wish to come for weekly counselling after your single session, we would enter into a weekly contract and fee. Should you wish to have further Single Sessions in the future, this would be possible. Please email me with any questions, or to book.</image:caption>

<image:title>Therapy - Rewind Technique Sessions</image:title>
<image:caption>Investment: £55 per session - Up to one hour Dubbed “closure without disclosure” the Rewind technique can be incorporated into our counselling sessions, or if you would prefer not to go into your traumatic memories verbally - booked as a standalone treatment. In the first session you will be invited to complete a questionnaire and answer some questions about the impact the trauma is having on your life. If the questionnaire score result suggests the Rewind technique may be beneficial,, we will then do the rewind itself. This will consist of (explained briefly) you remembering the incident in your mind and rewinding back to a time when you last felt safe before it happened. Two weeks later we will meet for a second session, where we will repeat the questionnaire so that we can compare scores to assess the impact the Rewind has had. We will then repeat the process. This may be all is needed or we can book a further third session two weeks later, if required. I will follow up with you six months later. The Rewind technique may benefit you if you were victim, witness, first responder or perpetrator of a life threatening event and are struggling with PTSD, flashbacks and life debilitating feelings as a result. For more information and research on the Rewind Technique, please go to founder David Muss’s website International Association for Rewind Trauma Therapy www.iartt.com</image:caption>

<image:title>Therapy - Online & Telephone Counselling</image:title>
<image:caption>Investment £55 for 50 minute session I have completed comprehensive training in online and telephone counselling, completing an 80 hour course. This will enable me to ethically and competently provide therapy to my clients via video online and by telephone. For information about online and telephone counselling please click here. Online sessions will be held via Psychology Today’s Sessions Platform at an agreed time and date, in a private meeting room and will last for 50 or 30 minutes. I will call you at an agreed time and date for a telephone session. Please read my online & telephone therapy guide and online client contract for more information. My privacy and GDPR policies can be found by clicking on the highlighted words. I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation prior to therapy commencing, if you would like to speak to me before deciding to go ahead. It is my belief that how comfortable you feel with me, will be key in the therapy process. Session fees will need to be paid by bank transfer 24 hours prior to the session. 24 hours notice must be given to cancel a session, otherwise a cancellation charge may apply. In the case of illness or unavoidable emergency, the session fee would be carried over to the next session. Any inappropriate dress or behaviour will result in my ending the session and retaining the fee. Please note, due to different worldwide regulations in the counselling & psychotherapy profession and my insurance restrictions, I can only work with clients who reside in the British isles and are over the age of 18. I can work with 16 and 17 year olds with parental consent, but this would involve a parent or legal guardian attending the first ten minutes of the online session. I cannot offer this with telephone work.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Me - Hello, I’m Katy Acton.</image:title>
<image:caption>I ‘m a warm, professional Counsellor/ Psychotherapist and Accredited registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). The BACP voluntary register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists is regulated by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social care. My registration number is 98695 and can be checked here. I follow the BACP’s ‘Ethical guidelines for the counselling professions’ - which can be found here www.bacp.co.uk/events-and-resources/ethics-and-standards/ethical-framework-for-the-counselling-professions/. I sincerely believe that counselling is a vocational job, with people at the heart. I decided to retrain as a counsellor after counselling helped me through a difficult time in my life. So I have my own experience of being a counselling client and have seen its positive effects on my life. As an individual I am committed to being trustworthy, sincere and acting with integrity. It’s my aim to provide an accepting safe space, free from judgement. I will be there to accompany and collaborate with you, on your journey to self-understanding and peace of mind. I’m an Integrative Counsellor & Psychotherapist. This means I’m trained in, and choose to work with, several therapeutic approaches. I believe each individual benefits from an approach tailored to their personality and what they are experiencing in their life. I work with the psychodynamic approach to understand how my client’s past experiences may have shaped, and be influencing, their present reality. The Humanistic approach, through being empathic and treating my clients with unconditional positive regard and congruence. This unconditional acceptance provides conditions that I hope, will result my clients feeling able to be their authentic self. And Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to help my clients to move forward with coping strategies, goal setting and thought challenging. As well as theories and skills, my Counselling & Psychotherapy degree covered neuroscience, psychopathology and multicultural counselling; all of which inform my practice. I’m also a trained Children’s Yoga Teacher and my knowledge of mindfulness, gratitude and the power of the breath, also underpin my approach. I have completed further training in working non-verbally using a variety of creative methods from drawing, to using toy animals and photographs. I’m always client-led in working this way. Above all else, I am here to listen and support without judging.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Me</image:title>
<image:caption>I have a diploma in Sydney Bank’s Three Principles Life Coaching method. This approach aims to recognise your inner purpose and explore ways in which you may be self-sabotaging your achievement of this. One of the key principles in this method is the relevance of thought in shaping our reality. This can be explored through new awareness of your thinking patterns and the influence of your inner voice. Some benefits of life coaching using this approach include: better time management, improved self-esteem, reconnection with our free will and intuition, increased level of focus and concentration, improved communication skills and productivity. Hopefully this process will help you to discover what is stopping you from reaching your full potential, improve your self-esteem and cultivate a growth mindset. As an integrative counsellor & psychotherapist, my life coaching training informs and underpins my practice and interventions. For some clients, working with a focus on personal development through coaching, could be provided on request.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Me - Experience</image:title>
<image:caption>I have over 12 years of experience of working with clients of various ages, ethnicities, backgrounds and gender. While I was training, I completed my student placement with Basildon Women’s Aid; working with women who had (or were currently) experiencing domestic violence and Open Door Interventions, working with 12-21 year olds. I stayed on to volunteer with both agencies long after completing my training hours; working at each for two years. I also volunteered with Thurrock Mind for 1 year, working with clients with mental health problems. Before starting my own private practice. I am experienced and work with clients on both short-term (6-8 sessions) and long-term basis (over 2 years). I’m also trained to work in single session therapy (please see Therapy page for more information). I’m client-led on the number of sessions you may need. This means we will regularly check in to review how things are going, the frequency of sessions or plan working towards ending. As well as in-person counselling, I’m trained and qualified to work online via video meeting or by telephone. I have undertaken training in the Rewind Technique. This process is beneficial for clients who are suffering with PTSD or traumatic flashbacks/memories of past abuse, trauma or being in (or witnessing) life threatening situations. There is no need to disclose details about what happened during the traumatic event, to engage in this approach. Please see www.iartt.com for more information.</image:caption>

<image:title>Support Groups and Workshops - Bereavement Support Group</image:title>
<image:caption>NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING (2026) Bereavement is something that all humans go through in life. It’s part of loving and losing a person or pet that you cared very deeply about. Though it’s common to all humans, our journey through bereavement is as personal to us as the relationship we had with the person/pet we have lost. So the saying “different boat, same storm” fits well as a metaphor for bereavement. Some of the more common things that bereaved people struggle with include: health anxiety, fear, anger, depression, numbness, unhealthy coping strategies, low mood, loneliness and feeling lost. Not everybody who is grieving needs, wants or can access one to one therapy. However, many people will benefit from sharing a space with others who are going through their own bereavement. A space that aims to offer support, listen without giving an opinion or ‘trying to fix’ and share healthy coping strategies. This is why I decided to set up this free drop in monthly support group. There is no pressure to share or comment unless you would like to, you can choose to reflect and observe. We will explore objective stories, poems, quotes and insights about grief. So you won’t necessarily have to talk about your personal experience and feelings - unless you choose to. As a qualified and experienced counsellor, who has worked with grieving clients for many years, and as a person who has experienced loss of close loved ones myself. I will hold a safe and empathic space for those who would like to come along. The group will be held at the ‘Living Room’, 191 Leigh Road, Leigh on Sea SS9 1JE. Next door is the Phabulous cafe, where you will be able to purchase drinks for the meeting if you would like. After the meeting there will be 30 minutes available in the room, to stay and talk to others or to myself or the other volunteer counsellor. You will be asked to complete a short contact form when you attend. Just asking for your name, address, email or telephone number and emergency contact details. If you have any questions, please get in touch by clicking the button below.</image:caption>

<image:title>Support Groups and Workshops - Thoughts Workshop</image:title>
<image:caption>Investment: £45 - 2 hour workshop A workshop based on the CBT principle that thoughts affect the way that we feel and subsequently, the way we behave. We will cover thinking errors and distortions, mindfulness, gratitude practice, thought experiments and journalling. You will be gifted a gratitude journal and hand-out pack to continue your own thought practise should you wish. This is an experiential group workshop, where learning will take place through sharing ideas and taking part in activities (there is never any pressure to share). Workshop will last two hours. Register your interest in attending workshop, once waiting list has enough people to go ahead, dates will be agreed. Previous participant feedback: “This course is so well put together. I would highly recommend this to anyone thinking about exploring CBT and wanting to change and adapt their way of thinking. You will go on to help so many people.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Support Groups and Workshops - Worry Workshop</image:title>
<image:caption>Investment: £20 - 1 hour workshop Do you feel stuck in a rut of worrying about worst case scenarios? Then this one hour workshop could be for you. Worrying thoughts are often linked to the unknown and involve predicting the future, usually imaging the worst will happen. This type of thinking can cause anxiety, which impacts us physically and emotionally. Anxiety then feeds into more worry and so the cycle continues. Sound familiar? During this experiential workshop, we will explore activities on control; your personal worries and reframing them; and coping strategies to distract from worry. Register your interest in attending workshop, once waiting list has enough people to go ahead, dates will be agreed.</image:caption>
